“Even as Brahms moved into Romantic harmonies and phrasing, he espoused Classical style. The structure is precise, while the harmonies grow richer. In the hands of a chamber orchestra, the phrases are cleaner and the precision is easier to hear than usual. The second movement had a beautiful stillness and simplicity, even in its heavier sections.”
